What Causes Ice Dams and How Do You Get Rid of Them?
An ice dam forms when heat escaping your attic melts snow on the upper roof. That water runs down to the cold eave, refreezes, and builds a wall of ice. Meltwater then backs up behind it, gets under the shingles, and comes into the house.
We melt ice dams out with steam rather than chipping at them. Chipping cracks the shingles underneath and rock salt eats gutters and kills the plants below. Once the ice is off, the real fix is upstream, in the attic insulation and ventilation letting the heat out. If water already got in, that becomes a roof repair.
